Banaban Citizenship Handbook
Informing Banabans Around the World of Their Citizenship Rights in Kiribati and Fiji
From every community dialogue session on Rabi, it was clear that access to services and the rights and privileges of citizens in Fiji and Kiribati is a barrier to the realization of Banabans’ human rights. The citizenship status of Banabans in different parts of the world is fraught with inequities resulting from displacement and colonialism. This Handbook is intended to clarify the status quo, while efforts are underway to ensure Banabans’ human rights in both Kiribati and Fiji are protected.
This Handbook is intended to provide the Banaban community with information about their rights to citizenship in Fiji and Kiribati. The Handbook is based on legislation, publicly available information on immigration procedures, and input from local lawyers. It was last updated in November 2023.
