ICAAD submitted this report in response to a Call for Input from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for its Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development (EMRTD) study on ‘Climate Justice, Sustainability, and the Right to Development’
This submission answers five of the questions posed by the EMRTD study (Q1, Q4, Q5, Q8 and Q9 in that order).
1. How can climate justice be systematically integrated into national and multilateral climate negotiation processes to ensure fair and inclusive outcomes?
4. How can the principle of self-determination and sovereignty over natural resources be respected and operationalized in global climate action?
5. In what ways can the RTD principles of equality of development opportunities and equitable resource distribution be operationalized within international climate negotiations and policies?
9. How can accountability mechanisms be enhanced to ensure that states and other actors adhere to commitments aligned with climate justice principles?
