Report finds gender biases in Pacific lead to shorter jail sentences
ABC Australia did an excellent interview of co-author Emily Christie on ICAAD’s report on the impact of gender bias in the judiciary.
“A new report’s found that gender biases and gender discrimination within Pacific courts is resulting in significantly shorter sentences for those found guilty of domestic violence or sexual assault.
The International Centre for Advocates Against Discrimination analysed more than 900 cases of sexual and gender-based violence in seven Pacific countries, including PNG, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.
It found that judges reduced sentences in around half of all cases where there were gender biases.
Human rights lawyer Emily Christie who was part of the research team, says that sentences were reduced by as much as 3 years compared to cases where there was no gender discrimination.” – Catherine Graue
