Lakhpreet Kaur: Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite

From the Artist:

“This piece depicts two Sikh women, both wearing different articles of faith, a dastar (turban) and a chuni (headscarf). The French slogan, “Liberty, Equality, and Brotherhood,” is called into question in light of he 2004 French legislation preventing people from wearing headwear. The women are gagged in this piece to symbolize the legislation silencing their voices and identity.”
